  • PAX Prime '11: Final Thoughts

We played a lot more games than we've written on at PAX Prime, but a lot of them just didn't show us enough to really warrant a whole article, so we decided to do a quick hit list here and get most of them out of the way, so strap in.  This will be quick enough, and then we'll never speak of it again. That's what she said.

    Jurassic Park (360, PS3, PC)

A non-fun version of Dragon's Lair, essentially.  Telltale was leading a modern Reanaisance of adventure titles, so why they decided to make an extended quick time event out of a CG movie that's even more boring than the third Jurassic Park movie is beyond me.  And this is from someone who liked the SNES Jurassic Park game...

    HAWTwired Hype Level - 4/10

    X-Men Destiny (360, PS3)

Champions of Norrath with mutants.  The demo didn't really excite, but since it was only the first few maps of the first few levels, there really wasn't enough to make an accurate judgement.  The Champions of Norrath assessment was the quickest point of reference I could come up with such limited exposure.  You beat up bad guys, you advance your skill tree, you min-max your abilities.  We'll have to wait till release to say any more about it.

    HAWTwired Hype Level - 6/10

    Spider-Man: Edge of Time (360, PS3)

There was a lot happening in Edge of Time, and it was hard to keep track of it all.  Combat appeared to be deep, but since there was no primer on what the control scheme was, it was frustrating and lead to a string of hard-attack-light-attack combos while I played.  Like X-Men Destiny, the short demo didn't really showcase the game's selling mechanic (altering events in Spider-Man's timeline to affect Spider-Man 2099's timeline), so again, it will be hard to judge until release.

    SSX (360, PS3)

I'm still addicted to SSX3--at one time or another I've owned it for Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube.  This ended up hampering me a bit on the new SSX, as the control scheme has been modeled more to the sticks than to the buttons (the demo rep compared it to Fight Night's punching mechanics), so it took me some getting used to, but yes, it is still SSX (and not that crappy SSX On Tour nonsense).  EA's "Mountain Man" program that generates courses based on real world mountain slopes works, and in a big way.  I'm looking forward to tackling the slopes and meticulously trying scoping out the best lines when this game drops in January.

    HAWTwired Hype Level - 8/10

    Forza 4 (360)

There are two major problems with a Forza demo--first, if you're playing it right, the demo (a single race) shouldn't take longer than about two minutes.  Secondly, if you're properly focusing for a driving game, the details in the graphics and sound are the last thing you're concentrating on.  But in it's own way, that's a compliment--if I hadn't been consciously trying to examine the graphics and sounds of the game, I never would have noticed them, which means that they are, in effect, creating a world complete enough that it doesn't distract with things that don't belong, and "enough, but not too much" is a damn hard target to hit with any creative exercise, so hats off for that.  I was hoping John Q Public would have a chance to get their hands on the Kinect controls for the game, but the demo ran with gamepad only.

    HAWTwired Hype Level - 8/10

Batman: Arkham City (360, PS3, PC)

This was the same demo that WB Games brought to E3, so nothing here was exactly Earth-shattering.  The combat as Catwoman was fun, possibly more fun than playing as The Bat, and her voice acting didn't annoy me as much as it seems to some other people.  Granted, it's not a voice that people are going to associate with "strong, positive heroine figure", but realistically, with all the bad puns an innuendo Catwoman has delivered as a character over the years, I think she's probably a bit more sex kitten than progressive women's advocates want to admit. Outside of Catwoman, the demo didn't really show anything that you didn't see from Arkham Asylum, but even if left at that, is more Arkham Asylum a bad thing?

    HAWTwired Hype Level - 8/10

    Capcom Booth (360, PS3, 3DS, PC)

We didn't play anything at the Capcom booth, and I want to tell you why.  I don't know if they were Capcom employees or PR representatives, but the folks working the booth kept turning people away from lining up for demos because they didn't want their lines to get over an hour long.  This is PAX.  People waited in line over an hour for Citizen Skywatch, and they didn't even know what the hell it was.  I waited two hours for Uncharted 3, and I don't even own a PS3.  Turning away people so your booth has a better aesthetic sends a message to your audience that your games are more important than they are.  Of course, so does re-releasing all your most popular games a year later, so I guess that just kinda tells us where Capcom sits these days.

  • Starcraft II Bug Causes Overheating

According to the horse’s mouth over at the Starcraft II forums, a bug in the game affects players  not playing with ENOUGH on screen details.  Effectively, the game gets bored and begins redrawing the screen rapidly over-and-over at high speed, like giving a five-year old a sack of crayons and an espresso and making him sit quietly outside the dressing room while Mommy tries on dresses.

A workaround is given on the forum, and since this IS from a list of known problems, it’s pretty safe to assume that a patch or update will be onhand soon.  Still, it’s odd to see a game that frags your system for NOT playing it hard enough.

    Then again, this is Activision…

  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance DLC Gets Second Edition

So, if you were like me, you snatched up Activision's Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 late winter after all the retailers started cleaning out their leftover holiday stocks, picking up the game at a very reasonable 20 bucks.  Then, if alos like me, you're a Marvel nut you hit your console's respective online store to pick up bonus characters like Magneto and Psylocke and the like, only realize that you missed the boat--the DLC characters were long gone.

The Character Packs, adding great Marvel characters Magneto, Psylocke, Cable, Carnage, and Black Panther to the mix, were set to a very limited time availability, and in the holiday crunch most news outlets missed covering the notice that window was only about a month-and-a-half.  We missed it here, at HAWTwired, as well, but since we didn't launch the site until after the DLC was removed, I'm going to ask for a little amnesty on this one.

Scanning One of Sword's blog over the holiday, I noticed that fan outcry has paid off, and Activision has reinstated the Character Packs, as well as adding a download for Juggernaut, a character that was originally only available though pre-order.  O-of-S reports that the Xbox Live packs are live, and though not solid date for the PSN packs has been stated, this Tuesday (July 6) seems the most likely culprit.

If you're looking to get a little extra mileage out of your MUA2, snatch the packs up while you can, as the DLC is on a timer again, only this time with the more realistic cut-off of December 31, 2010.  If nothing else, it will give you a good excuse to go through the game again and play the other faction (I'm looking at you, Anti-Reg heads...)

  • 'The Silver Lining' Returns!

So, I suppose I should probably bring this story to your attention, since I was the one that did all the original defamation, but once-closed-down-by-Activision fan project 'The Silver Lining' is alive and less than two weeks from being in your hands.

If you missed the chaos the first go-round, 'The Silver Lining' is a fan-made sequel to King's Quest 8 that was labored over for eight years, only to have Activision squish the project as they were approaching release.  Months of negotiations later, Activision has rescinded their cease-and-desist order and granted Phoenix Online (a studio more than deserving of the name now) a non-commercial license to release the game.

Episode one of 'The Silver Lining' is going to be available on July 10th (I guess it's episodic now?  Maybe it always was and I never noticed...) and, judging by the trailer, it appears to have some kind of fairy tale themes involved.  Definitely a Beauty & The Beast reference, and I thought I saw maybe a Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty in there?

Anyhoo, congrats to Phoenix Online.  And congrats to Activision for generating some public PR for a change.  One Of Swords's blog even reports that a "thank you Activision" thread has popped up in POS's official forums.

  • Coming Never: The Silver Lining

On today's episode of "You've Wasted Eight Years of Your Life", we focus on the Phoenix Online Studios. Phoenix Online Studios (I’m on their side, so don’t expect me to use the acronym “POS“) has spent the last eight years toiling on a fan-made love-labored sequel to King's Quest 8 called "The Silver Lining".

A lot can happen in eight years. Originally, when Phoenix began The Silver Lining, the King's Quest properties were owned by Vivendi, who took them over from Sierra. Today, though, the Sierra library is owned by the game industries own Oceania, Activision.

Videndi actually had given Phoenix Online Studios permission to run with The Silver Lining, granting them a non-commercial license for it, something Phoenix was planning to run with when they launched The Silver Lining as a episodic release this Spring.

Then, in a move that perhaps doesn't pull as many heartstrings as Squenix killing the fan-made Chrono Trigger sequel a few months ago, but one much more insidious, the enchanted sword fell. Activision's legal team (which I can only assume is referred to as the unfortunately catchy "Actilegal") has apparently reneged that decision and issued Phoenix a cease and desist order on The Silver Lining, going so far as forcing The Silver Lining's forums to be taken down.

Let's pause there for a second, and reflect. Activision literally removed The Silver Lining from gaming. Tell me that's not a metaphor coming to life.

This comes on the heels of the gaming community's favorite carrion crawler, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick (Bo-Kot on the streets) announcing during his keynote at DICE that Activision is going to take pains to work more closely and cooperative with its licensees. Which, judging by how they handled Red Octane, means they'll co-opt The Silver Lining, farm it out to another developer, complain when it doesn't change the industry as they expect, kill the whole studio, and say they should have gone with Phoenix to begin with.

On a side note, I’m disappointed that no one caught on that Bo-Kot did NOT deliver a real keynote at DICE. His “business casual” and message of peace and love was obviously a performance piece meant to satire Steve Jobbs. My personal favorite part was when he explained he started out as "just a developer". Historical note: Hitler started out as "just a painter". Moving on...

Personally, I'm hoping that Phoenix Online Studios can find a way to strip The Silver Lining of its King's Quest heritage enough to dodge copyright restrictions and release it. And I hope it sells a ton, when it does. I'll personally buy and give away several copies if they can manage to do so, in fact, if for no reason other than to stick it to an biased and inefficient copyright system.

But that’s a gripe for another day.
