  • PAX Prime '11: Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (PS3)

If we have one critical flaw here at HAWTwired that I regret, its our lack of literacy when it comes to the Playstation 3. By which, I don't mean our brain malfunctions and we can't read a screen a PS3 loads into, but we as a group are not very familiar with the little black box and its library. Its not for lack of want; the Playstation family has a great history and the PS3 exclusives number along some if the greatest titles of this generation. But as labor-of-love, unpaid games writers, we can only play what we can afford, and thus far, for our editors, the PS3 hasn't fit into our individual family budgets.

For that reason, I always try to expose myself to at least one PS3 exclusive when I hit the game expos, and at PAX I went after what may be the biggest of them all: Uncharted 3.

First we were allowed quality time with the multiplayer, which, I know there are a lot of fans of Uncharted's multiplayer, but I'm not one of them. The controls just didn't feel tuned in or precise enough for me. The shooting was a little on the spastic side (I'm pretty sure real AK-47's have less recoil than their Uncharted counterparts), and the movement/platforming felt like a jerkier, airier version of Assassin's Creed. Both features were functional, but neither felt tight and polished. In fairness, this is a demo, remember, but I'm a big fan of the motto, "If you can't make something great, don't show it". I'm sure that to legions of Nathan Drake fans that have been following the series since its inception, the controls were old hat by now, but as a new user, they were certainly not pick-up-and-play friendly.

After nose-diving-off-high-rises and tossing-grenades-when-I-meant-to-look-down-the-sights my team to a narrow defeat, the folks from Naughty Dog took us into a small theater space to show us a short demo of the game's single player campaign. It was only then that I truly understood what Uncharted 3 was about.

The level had Drake and his blonde lady friend (the interwebz say her name is Elena, but I assume, in typical action hero format, you can tell his lady friends apart by their hair color) trying to break into your typical armed-guarded Middle Eastern airfield to catch a large cargo plane. The plane begins to approach the runway before Drake can get on board, so he quickly abandons any ambitions for stealth and a running, gunning chase breaks out as the player tries to get onboard before it takes off.

Stowing away in the plane's guts, Drake decides to emerge, resulting in a heart-pounding action sequence that included, but was not limited to:

    • A one-sided fist fight against a guard twice Drake's size
    • Dodging the majority of the plane's cargo as it was quickly dragged out the hold at 15,000 feet
    • Manically climbing debris back into the plane's hold
    • And engaging in a running gun battle in-between the shifting freight in the hold as the plane banks back and forth.

It was during this sequence that I was amazed to feel my face lighting up in a way that I haven't felt since watching Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade in the theater as a kid. That was the level of adventure and excitement that merely watching the game instilled--childlike wonder. Every time Hollywood released The Mummy or Flight of The Phoenix or National Treasure or a hundred other such films, this was the magic they were trying to capture--the down-to-Earth adventure sensibilities of Alan Quartermain with the big budget excitement of Jerry Bruckheimer, combined in a golden ratio that audiences have been waiting to see again since the original Indiana Jones trilogy.

The multiplayer? That's unimportant. At the risk of making an incessantly long preview even longer, here's an allegory. Years ago I worked in a fine dining restaurant situated inside a casino. Every day, that restaurant lost money, but that wasn't the point of it. It was an amenity to the casino patrons. And while maybe 200 people chose to partake in the restaurant and found it a wonderful addition, the casino's real game was the 20,000 daily that hit the main floor. That's what Uncharted's multiplayer is: an amenity. It's not the reason the majority are coming to the show, but its a nice goody to have waiting for you on the side.

The real star here is the single player campaign, and while we can sit here and talk special effects and camera movements and graphical resolution all day, it's how they fit together in the senses if the observer that causes them to cross the line of conscious appreciation of technical skill and into the realm of guttural, emotional reaction and amazement that separates this game from the vast majority of titles out there today.

    HAWTwired Hype Level: 9/10

A stomachable side-dish of multiplayer gives way to a gourmet single-player main dish.  Uncharted as a AAA franchise is solidifying its position at the head of the pack.

  • PAX Prime '11: HAWTwired Hype Notice

It's that time again, Post-PAX when we drop a whole ton of HAWTwired handled game previews on you.  Last year we had some confusion on our rating system, which lead to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and misinterpreted judgements, so I wanted to clarify things early, as well as refine the system a bit.

Last year we referred to the system as games being HAWTgraded, which was probably an unfair misnomer.  You can't grade a demo.  It's like a restaurant critic reviewing a restaurant on the font they use on their menu.  A demo is a promotional tool, not a finished product, and has always been looked at as such by our staff.  Unfortunately, our "HAWTgrading" previews led some to believe that we were laying some sort of final judgement on the title, which wasn't the case.  Some games last year we hated the demo and loved the game, while others spectacular demos gave way to utterly mediocre final products.

So we've renamed our preview rating, changing it to "HAWTwired Hype".  This isn't a judgement on the final product so much as how excited about the game the preview made up.  A high HAWTwired Hype score means we're excitedly doing a pee-pee dance while we wait for the release, a low score means that the preview left a sour taste in out mouth for the title.

Hopefully, this clears things up a bit, and helps both the players and developers who read our site keep faith in our honesty and integrity.

    Thanks.

  • PAX Prime '11: Borderlands 2

Borderlands was one of those games that restores your faith in gaming: the publisher took a reluctant chance on a new IP, the marketing was lax compared to the big budget releases that it tried to share shelf space with, and part way through the development Gearbox threw out all the art direction and started again from scratch. And despite these hurdles, Borderlands not only survived, it flourished, proving that sometimes, the cream really does rise to the top, no matter what.

The first veil was lifted on Borderlands 2 a couple weeks ago at Gamescom, and Gearbox Software brought it along with them to PAX--in a big way. They gave all 900 attendees of their Gearbox Software panel a free copy of the game, much to the scorn of everyone who didn't get in. (Randy Pitchford, I apologize for my love of statistics and raw data--please forgive me).

So what did these lucky bastards gamers get? Or, I guess, will be getting, since the game doesn't officially drop until fiscal year 2013? Well, for a game still at least a year-and-a-half away, Borderlands 2 already looks amazing.

Gearbox is not taking this sequel lightly, largely because they still remember the scars of the original Borderlands release, when they had to drop the game into the market along side a bevy of sequels. The experience (and general lack of industry confidence in new IP's) has given them a nearly visceral need to make very aspect of Borderlands 2 greater than the previous.

The guns and their manufacturers, for instance. Sure you were aware in the first Borderlands that the guns had different manufacturers, and you may have been vaguely aware that different manufacturers tended to prefer different features in their weapons, but Borderlands 2 aims to make these differences more pronounced. Tediore, for instance, which the development team refers to as the 'Wal-Mart' of planet Pandora, creates cheap, disposable guns--so much so that rather than reloading them, players just toss them away, causing explosive damage where the hit (scalable to how many rounds were left in the clip when tossed).

Enemy AI has also received an overhaul.  Bad guys were seen interpreting and maneuvering around cover and over elevations. Support units would arrive on the battlefield to heal wounded combatants and then deflect weapon fire.  Some particularly burly nasties would pick up environmental object and even vehicles to toss at the player.  Better hit detection gave Gearbox the ability to cause enemies to stagger, be knocked back, and even attempt to battle from a crippled position.

Pandora itself was not overlooked, as environments are consciously less static than in the predecessor (Gearbox wants the world to feel already lived in when the player enters an area, not as though there were a bunch of MOB’s just waiting for a reason to exist).  Areas shown in the demo were more lively than the dustbowl Pandora of Borderlands, running the gamut of grasslands, technologically advanced cities, and arctic mountains.  A better sense of area relation was also important to the developers, as locales can be seen in their relative positions to each other on the horizon, rather than a clichéd impassible mountain range.

Details are still under wraps on the story.  Gearbox has confirmed that Borderlands 2 takes place five years after the Vault was opened at the end of the previous installment, something that a no-good-nik by the name of Handsome Jack has taken credit for.  Gearbox confirmed that Roland, Mordecai, and Brick (three of the player characters from the original) will return as NPC’s, and revealed two playable characters, a Gunserker (think Berserker with guns; his special ability is Dual Wielding any two weapons) and a new Siren, though her ability is still being kept secret.

The demo ran flawlessly, the graphics and audio were spot on and engaging, and, yes, millions and millions of procedurally created guns are coming back.  For a game so far off, it looks amazing, and I can’t even conceive the level of  polish they can slap on this game in that amount of time, but I’m damn interested to find out.

    HAWTwired Hype Level: 10/10

Rarely have I gotten this hyped for a game so far off.  The Mayans better be full of crap, because if the world ends before Borderlands 2 drops in 2013, I will go "Macho Man" Randy Savage on whatever supernatural being I need to...

  • MojangAD vs. Bethesda Gets Interesting

In case you haven't been following it, Mojang (probably better known to most of you as "the Minecraft guys") recently got handed a lawsuit over copyright infringement from publisher Bethesda. The issue is that Bethesda is upset by the name of a non-Minecraft related project that Mojang called "Scrolls", claiming it's infringing on the "Elder Scrolls" copyright.

This didn't initially seem like a majorly news worthy event--sure, Bethesda suing over all gaming uses of the word "scroll" is like Disney suing over all entertainment uses of the word "mouse" (i.e. retarded), but larger companies try to push smaller ones around with legal muscle all the time, so there's really nothing of note in this case.

Until Notch challenged Bethesda to a Quake III tournament.

To quote from Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson's Tumblr:

"I challenge Bethesda to a game of Quake 3. Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins.

If we win, you drop the lawsuit.

If you win, we change the name of Scrolls to something you're fine with."

So far, no word from Bethesda on whether they accept or not. I'm guessing their lawyers will advise them not to, but i hope to hell they do. Not because I'm some sycophant looking to see a big guy get taken down a peg or two (which would be my normal reasoning), but because I'd love to establish a precedent of people resolving conflict with a game, rather than a round of "who can hire the most expensive lawyer".

So come on, Bethesda. Do it. Use it to your advantage. You can offer to live stream the competition to people who pre-order Skyrim or hold the competition at MineCon or something. Just do it to prove that games, not lawyers, are the future.

  • Review: Toy Soldiers: Cold War (XBLA)

The first Toy Soldiers was a whimsical take on tower defense, taking place in a world of wind-up and tin soldiers modeled after World War 1 fighters.  It was a delightful take on the “living toys” well that has been milked plenty of times before, but was done freshly enough to keep any thoughts of “I’ve seen this before” from cropping up in your head.  Hoping to catch lightning in a bottle a second time, Signal Studios has decided to move their series into a realm a little more familiar to kids of the 80’s and beyond--playing in a world of Cold War and G.I. Joe inspired toys.

All the tower defense tropes you’re familiar with are in play, you buy towers with different attack types, kill oncoming hordes, receive money/resources for killing hordes, use said resources to upgrade the current defenses and build more.  Toy Soldiers: Cold War brings in a couple of more hands-on features, allowing direct control of turrets and piloting remote controlled heavy vehicles like tanks and helicopters.  Direct control gives the player the ability to work up scoring multipliers and even earn special attacks, such as artillery barrages and a Stallone-inspired rampaging commando.

The execution of basics in this game is excellent.  Graphics, sound, and gameplay are all solid.  The scoring system awards time management and hand-on play instead of sitting back and letting the AI do the work for you.  Unfortunately, this far into the console cycle there’s a ton of solid games out there, and I was left waiting for something in TS:CW to stand out to me.

The original Toy Soldiers had a marvelous charm about it due to the tin and wind-up atmosphere behind the “toys”.  But Cold War lacks that charm on almost every level.  The only reminders that you get that you’re playing with “toys” is from fly-by opening sequences at the beginning of the level and the “battery charge” time-limit on vehicles.  Even the screen shots I’ve added to the review make it hard to pick the “toy” from the “soldier”, and I tried to pick some of the more obvious ones out of a sense of honesty.  Other than those touches, you’re just playing “generic Cold War tower defense”; if you were playing TS:CW and told me you forgot you were supposed to be playing with 80’s era action figures, I wouldn’t just understand, I’d be surprised if you didn’t.

So, lacking the polish of the 80’s action figure paint coating, you’re left with a collection of mini-games and a generic tower defense.  I feel like judging a game on it’s mini-games is like a food critic judging a meal based on the napkin and after dinner mint, so that leaves us with a generic tower defense.  And frankly, there’s better tower defense games out there, and I’m not talking in general, I’m talking better tower defense games on Xbox Live Arcade.  You’d be better off taking your money and buying fifteen dollars worth of G.I. Joes (which these days appears to be less than two).

Unrealized imagination and uninventive implementation, paired with a game that really doesn’t give you a reason to purchase above other selections, are the reason I have to rate this game a

    About Elder Scrolls V:

The next chapter in the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls saga arrives from the makers of the 2006 and 2008 Games of the Year, Bethesda Game Studios. Skyrim reimagines and revolutionizes the open-world fantasy epic, bringing to life a complete virtual world open for you to explore any way you choose.

The Empire of Tamriel is on the edge. The High King of Skyrim has been murdered. Alliances form as claims to the throne are made. In the midst of this conflict, a far more dangerous, ancient evil is awakened. Dragons, long lost to the passages of the Elder Scrolls, have returned to Tamriel. The future of Skyrim, even the Empire itself, hangs in the balance as they wait for the prophesized Dragonborn to come; a hero born with the power of The Voice, and the only one who can stand amongst the dragons.

  • Angry Birds Party Planning

So, I realize that this is hardly a new thing, but a photographer friend of mine recently got the opportunity to work an Angry Birds-themed birthday party, and the photos were so charming I felt I had to pass the whole magilla along.  The cake-making tutorials have been on the net for a while, but the party planner/mom from Simply Styled Home also made sure to add tutorials for party games, slingshot and pig/ball construction, treat ideas, as well as an Etsy link for themed printables.

Check out Simply Styled Home for more fun household ideas, and Jen Martin Studios for great portrait and event photos in NW Washington.

Our recommended new release of the week will go to:

At last the popular manga/anime series makes its way to the PlayStation®3 platform! There are numerous anime-based video games, but many fall short in gameplay. Bleach: Soul Resurrección; however, faithfully represents the anime series with its beautiful cel-shaded graphics and combines it with amazing gameplay. The game style is simple enough for action game beginners, yet has enough features to satisfy hardcore players. The game follows the battle against the evil Arrancars, but there are times when you will be able to play as the enemy. This is especially exciting if you follow the manga closely, since you can be characters in the manga that are normally forgotten after being defeated.
