About the PS3:
As with previous models, the PlayStation 3 160GB system features an IBM "Cell" processor and a co-developed NVIDIA graphics processor that together allow the system to perform two trillion calculations per second. Yesterday, Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, said it will match the price of competitors’ ads on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Walmart's Black Friday and Thanksgiving Weekend savings will begin with Thanksgiving Day online specials on Nov. 25 and will run through Saturday. Customers with ads from competitors, such as Target Corp. and Sears, and BestBuy, will be able to obtain those promotional prices at any Wal-Mart store.

The latest trip to Albion has arrived, and I have to say I enjoyed the ride, though, in trying to retrospect conversation points on the game, I’m hard pressed to figure out why.
This time around, as prince/princess of Albion and the progeny of the hero of the previous game, you flee the castle and embark on a quest you regain your birthright as a Hero and oust your malevolent brother off the throne to protect the people you may just end up shooting in the face down the line anyway. You’ll hack and shoot and fireball your way across the kingdom in an attempt to make allies and piece together an army capable of usurping the throne.
The story happens a scant 50 years after the events of Fable II, though looking at the overhauls of Albion architecture and personages, you’d be hard pressed to believe it. The landscape has changed much in 50 years, most noticeably in Bowerstone, where it looks like the locals are in about as much of a hurry to preserve their heritage as 1980’s American land developers were. Also, for only being 50 years having passed, familiar faces are few and far between. I only counted five repeat characters, and two were immortals and the other three ghosts (though I do have to give Lionhead severe props for bringing Reaver back into the series), leading me to suspect Albion of being in a 1984 scenario where no one can really be sure what the actual date is--a supposition that turned out being eerily plausible considering the game’s final act, but more on that later. 
Character (and dog) advancement has been streamlined from Fable II, with Melee, Ranged, and Magic becoming all-encompassing stats rather than harboring subcategories beneath them. At times, especially if you played a lot of Fable II, this seems limiting. Spell stacking, the ability to equip yourself with up to five different spells of varying power is clean out, replaced by the “Weaving” mechanic, which is essentially just casting two different spells simultaneously. It’s even less thrilling than it sounds. The traditional Fable spell list has also been shortened, with Slow Time and Summon Creatures being replaced by equivocal potions, which in a way lets you carry a couple extra spells, but only if you’ve been sitting around desperately racking your brain for ways the game redeems itself.
One oft-touted mechanic, the weapon advancement is, in traditional Peter Molyneaux style, a nifty feature but slightly less robust than you were led to imagine. The only weapons that will drastically alter appearance based on your play style are the weapons left to you by your Mother--the Hero Sword, Hero Hammer, Hero Rifle, and Hero Pistol. Other weapons throughout the game will also upgrade and change appearance slightly with use, but only on predetermined courses of action, such as “Kill 300 Hollow Men” or “Have 5 Children”. 
I am always hesitant to mention technical hiccups in a game, because I personally tend to glitch games out like George Clooney in The Men Who Stare at Goats (I killed about four kiosks at PAX this year--I‘m pretty sure that‘s a record). But one thing that upset me was the infamous "glowing trail of breadcrumbs" that were introduced in Fable II to lead the player to their goal. In the previous incarnation, the breadcrumbs loaded quickly and immediately, often before the scenery had fully rendered. In Fable III, the breadcrumb trail is the last possible item the game renders, resulting in moments of standing still at a crossroad for over a minute waiting for the system to draw out the path to the next target.
The most disheartening thing to me was the game’s pacing. The first part of the game, the revolution against the King, runs long and is full of meaty quests, both main and side varieties. After usurping the throne, the storyline takes the textbook Syd Field turn to a second plot point and gives the player “one year” to accomplish a second task. The problem is that there is no standard unit of time in Albion; the timeline is driven by spastic and seemingly random units of story quests game time. One story quest will read as 30 days in game time, and the next will equal 120 days for no discernable reason. The result, in hindsight, is dramatic, as suddenly all the time you thought you had to prepare goes rocketing out the window leaving you vastly under prepared. It’s nice drama, but as a gameplay mechanic you can’t help but feel cheated and slighted by the game, as though it’s ultimately set you up to fail. Had the final act been linked to the already present day and night cycles, a player could more accurately gauge their actions and strategies, but as it stands accomplishing your goals successfully nearly necessitates a second play through, or at least a strategy guide. 
Realizing that this review sounds like a hate letter that should be pinned to Lionhead Studios door with a bloody knife, I should mention I actually enjoyed this game quite a bit, but not for anything new that was brought to the table. I enjoyed Fable III because I enjoyed Fable II, end of story. But if you were expecting some new innovation in the stories of Albion, don’t expect to find it here. Thinking back, we should have probably saw this coming when Peter Molyneax announced during the production of Fable II that he already knew what he wanted to do with 3, 4, 5, and 6, because that meant mentally he already merged the storylines for the next ten years with an engine from 2008. While the Fable formula holds up for now, it’ll be interesting to see how much longer it can last without a total overhaul…

About the PS3 160GB:
As with previous models, the PlayStation 3 160GB system features an IBM "Cell" processor and a co-developed NVIDIA graphics processor that together allow the system to perform two trillion calculations per second.
